Rest is critical especially if you are recovering from a sprain. Reduce your physical activity and try not indulge in the exercises that brought on the injury in the first place. If you have to get around, take help from a relative or use a walking stick.
Applying ice to the area of injury can help to bring down the swelling. Ice should be applied immediately especially if you have sprained a muscle. This should be repeated every 1-2 hours. You can wrap the ice in a towel before applying. A bag of frozen peas also works wonders.
The sprain has to be compressed to keep the swelling in check. After you ice the injury, cover it up tightly with a compression bandage. This allows the fatigued muscle to heal.
Make sure you keep your limb or hand elevated. Keep it elevated to the level of the heart. This may also help to reduce the swelling a bit.
Once 48 hours are up, you can try to move about a bit to see if the pain has lessened. In case it hasn’t, see a doctor at once as it could be a more serious case of muscle pull or tear.
Excruciating muscle pulls and tears require pain relief especially in the first 2-3 days. You can take any OTC pain relief drug like ibuprofen which is very effective. They also are helpful in case of fractures and work towards reducing the swelling.
Immobilizing the affected limb or muscle allows it to completely heal. Too much of movement can cause your muscle to spasm and give rise to acute pain. Immobilization allows blood circulation to return to the site of the injury, thus allowing it to heal.
You can use a sling for your arm or shoulder and a splint for your legs. Fractures are usually covered with casts made of plaster. This gives them complete immobility.
Very severe muscle injuries have widespread and persistent inflammation which does not go with conventional treatments.
In such cases, a corticosteroid injection will be given along with an anesthetic to reduce the pain. This helps to bring down the swelling. These injections also help to reduce the pain that was caused by the swelling.
Ligament and tendon injuries take a long time to heal. Some of them can take months. In such cases physiotherapy often comes to the rescue. It involves massage, manipulation and special exercise that help to strengthen the muscles or the supporting joints.
This helps you to gain better power and control over the affected limb. Physiotherapy may be carried out over a period of few weeks especially if the injury has been very extensive.
